Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has announced today that it has sold its commercial pharmaceutical business, Moorfields Pharmaceuticals, to the ophthalmic manufacturer, Rayner Pharmaceuticals Limited
This announcement follows a strategic review by Moorfields Eye Hospital and the businesses within its portfolio. Staff currently employed by Moorfields Pharmaceuticals will transfer to Rayner however they will continue to be based in London and will shortly be moving to a new office.
Rayner is a British company and the only manufacturer of intraocular lenses in the UK.
Rayner has been operating for over 100 years and currently sells to more than 80 countries around the world.
David Probert, chief executive of Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Following a detailed strategic review, we have taken the decision to sell Moorfields Pharmaceuticals. We believe Rayner will enable the pharmaceutical business to grow and ensure that its products are available for many years to come.”

Although the intraocular lens plays a leading role in the visual outcomes of cataract and refractive surgery, the pharmaceuticals that manage the tear film and inflammation are critical to the end result.
