Nystagmus

The following information provides a guide for GPs on how to manage or make a referral for presentation of Nystagmus in children.

  • Low risk pathology

    Nystagmus present from birth and infant/child appears well:

    • routine referral with details about development,
    • general health and
    • any neurological concerns

     

    Non-urgent e-referral to eye clinic

  • High risk pathology

    • Nystagmus present and symptoms such as dizziness, headaches or vomiting

     

    Urgent referral to paediatric casualty (not eye clinic)

Referral information

If possible, attach photo of eye to e-referral

Always include:

  • Child’s date of birth
  • Address
  • Child’s social worker details (including Borough), if any
  • Parent/carer contact phone number and email
