Our Green Plan

As we look to the future, Moorfields is deeply committed to sustainability and environmental stewardship. The implementation of this green plan builds on our legacy of innovation and leadership, ensuring we remain a global centre of excellence while delivering care that is not only pioneering, but also environmentally responsible.

Foreword by CEO Peter Ridley

Just as our clinical care is grounded in research and evidence, so too is our approach to sustainability. Our green plan is data-led, transparent, and focused on measurable impact. We recognise that healthcare contributes significantly to global carbon emissions.

At Moorfields, we are acting to reduce our footprint across areas, including – direct emissions, energy consumption, procurement, travel, and more. We are doing this whilst ensuring every initiative supports high-quality patient care. Our efforts are already delivering co-benefits, with virtual consultations reducing travel miles and emissions, greener procurement supporting our supply chain to decarbonise; and our digital innovation accelerating efficiency whilst cutting waste.

We acknowledge that reaching net zero is complex. Cultural, financial, and operational barriers must be addressed head-on, with courage and clarity. As a specialist provider, Moorfields is uniquely positioned to consider how we redesign services for low-carbon excellence, and we are committed to looking at how we can extend influence far beyond our own walls.

This green plan sets out how we will achieve this – balancing clinical ambition with carbon responsibility, embedding sustainability into every decision, and embracing a future where world-class eye care contributes to a healthier planet. I am deeply proud of the innovation and determination shown by our staff and partners. Our shared purpose and strategy states that we will use our resources responsibly, safeguarding what we have for the next generation.

With this plan, we move forward together.
