Finding support for self-harm

You are not alone and support is available.

What is self-harm?

Sometimes, when children and young people are feeling very sad, worried, angry, stressed, or overwhelmed, they may hurt themselves.

This is called self-harm. Self-harm is often a way of coping with difficult feelings, but it does not make those feelings go away.

If you have been hurting yourself, it is important to know that you are not alone and support is available.

Talking to someone you trust can help you feel safer and supported.

Things you can do to help

Getting help can feel hard, but small steps can make a big difference.

  • Notice your feelings

Keeping a diary, drawing, or recording a voice note can help you understand what makes you feel upset.

  • Try healthy coping strategies

Go for a walk, listen to music, draw, read, practice calm breathing, or spend time with family, friends, or pets.

  • Talk to someone you trust

This could be a parent, carer, teacher, school nurse, trusted adult, friend, or your GP.

  • Ask for help

If you are finding things difficult, a doctor, counsellor, mental health team, or helpline can support you.
