Ptosis (droopy eyelid)

The following information provides a guide for GPs on how to manage or make a referral for presentation of Ptosis (droop eyelid) in children.

  • Low risk Pathology

    • Onset from birth
    • Pupil not covered
    • No difference in pupil size between the eyes
    • Age 5 years or older

     

    Refer to local optometrist for GOS sight test

  • Moderate pathology

    • If longstanding, but pupil covered and/or age younger than 5 years

     

    Non-urgent referral to hospital eye service, including above information

  • Potentially Serious Pathology

    • Recent onset
    • Difference in pupil size
    • And/or age younger than 5 years

     

    Urgent referral to hospital eye clinic

Referral information

  •  If possible, attach photo of face and eyes (open and close) to e-referral

Always include:

  • Child’s date of birth
  • Address
  • NHS Number
  • Child’s social worker details (including Borough), if any
  • Parent/carer contact phone number and email
