Eye trauma

The following information provides a guide for GPs on how to manage or make a referral for presentation of Eye trauma in children.

GP Management

Assess eye appearance, pupil reactions and shape, any serious bruising or limitation eye movements.

Assessment: G fluorescein 2% plus white light (blue light better if available) to:

  • Highlight epithelial defect (abrasion)
  • Detect aqueous leak

Treatment for abrasion:

  • Chloramphenicol ointment three times a day or drops four times a day for 5 days
  • Ask patient/ parent to contact Moorfields Attend Anywhere portal (via Moorfields website) if symptoms not improving (child not comfortable to open the eye, persistent pain) or vision reduced after 48 hours
  • If symptoms recur, or eye becomes gritty/irritable after initial healing, prescribe night eye ointment at bedtime, for three months.
