Management of children's eye conditions
The following information is for GPs to use as a guide when managing and making referrals for children's eye conditions.
- Absent or uncertain red reflex
- Allergic eye disease - (seasonal, perennial, vernal, atopic)
- Anisocoria (unequal pupils)
- Bilateral sensorineural hearing deficit
- Chalazion
- Chemical injury
- Congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction – delayed tear duct opening from birth
- Eyelid haemangioma (birthmark on the lid)
- Eye trauma
- Failed vision screening in school
- Frequent blinking
- Glaucoma (suspected)
- Infective conjunctivitis
- Lid margin inflammation - Blepharitis
- Nystagmus
- Perplexing (medically unexplained/functional) symptoms
- Pigmented/non-pigmented lesions on the eye
- Preseptal/orbital cellulitis
- Ptosis (droopy eyelid)
- Strabismus (Squint)
- Suspicious Optic Discs
- Uveitis screening in children with arthritis
