Moorfields at Brent Cross reopens at new site

Moorfields at Brent Cross has reopened to patients in its new location within the shopping centre.

On 28 February, staff at Brent Cross were joined by Martin Kuper, chief executive, and Sheila Adam, chief nurse, to celebrate the re-opening of Moorfields at Brent Cross earlier this month. The site was closed temporarily to allow for a move to a new, larger space within the shopping centre.

As part of project HERCULES, Brent Cross has paved the way in how Moorfields, and healthcare partners across London, deliver diagnostic care more efficiently to patients.

In its first year of opening, the hub provided care to more than 15,000 patients, helping to reduce patient waiting times in cataract, glaucoma, and medical retina services across northwest London. It now sees 25,000 patients, which would not be possible without the continued hard work of the trust's dedicated teams.

The hub has also provided new careers for those not traditionally employed in healthcare services. Many of the trust's ophthalmic technicians were trained at Brent Cross.

Speaking at the opening event, to recognise the hard work delivered by the teams of people working on the project, Martin said:

“I'd like to say a big thank you to all the staff who have worked on Brent Cross, from its first opening back in 2021, to today, in its new, larger location within the shopping centre. I'd also like to thank staff at our other sites, who have taken in patients in the interim period whilst Brent Cross was closed. This is a fantastic facility and will serve patients across northwest London for the next ten years.”

Alessandra Battinelli, ophthalmic technician manager, said: “The new location is a more permanent place for our patients to come to and feel more at home. This new location and facility is great for patient experience and for the people in north west London.”

Funding for project HERCULES was initially provided by the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) at Moorfields Eye Hospital and the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology (IoO), with our Brent Cross hub designed by a team of UCL architects and scientists led by Hari Jayaram, consultant ophthalmologist at Moorfields, and Professor Paul Foster, consultant ophthalmologist at Moorfields and professor of ophthalmic epidemiology and glaucoma studies at UCL IoO.
