Dr Roxanne Crosby-Nwaobi awarded for achievements in eye and vision advocacy

Congratulations to Dr Roxanne Crosby-Nwaobi, lead nurse for research at Moorfields Eye Hospital, who has been selected by the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) and its Advocacy and Outreach Committee to receive the 2023 Achievements in Eye and Vision Advocacy Award.

In being recognised for this prestigious award, the judges agreed Roxanne embodies the culture of advocacy ARVO values, and that her efforts in advocacy have undoubtedly benefited the eye and vision research enterprise.

Roxanne has been recognised for her excellent work in shaping eye care research at Moorfields with several awards, most recently as Nurse Researcher of the Year at the RCN Nursing Awards and Clinical Research and Education at the Zenith Global Health Awards for her ongoing campaign to increase diversity in clinical trials.

Underserved communities, minor ethnic groups and people from socioeconomically deprived areas are traditionally poorly represented in clinical trials. In response, Roxanne has been leading a campaign to raise awareness of opportunities to take part in research among underserved communities. By making underserved communities more represented, it not only improves their outcomes, but the overall effectiveness of new treatments in a wider, more diverse population.

"This award recognises the dedication of my team and allies to provide a platform for our underserved communities to voice their concerns contribute to and lead the research agenda, and be empowered to become advocates in their communities," says Roxanne.  "This award will open further doors of opportunity to allow more individuals, families and underserved communities to have access to eye health care and research.”

Congratulations to Roxanne, not only for this prestigious recognition of her work, but for truly embodying our trust values of excellence, equity and kindness.
