Nurses make up the largest single professional group employed at Moorfields and play a vital role in providing specialist care to all our patients.

Varied nursing roles

Although we are a specialist ophthalmic Trust, nursing at Moorfields is neither uniform nor homogenous.

Nurses work on the day care wards and in clinics offering expert advice, assistance and care. As a tertiary referral centre, we cater for all ophthalmic patients, including children. We also have specialist accident and emergency nurses working in an acute 24 hour department seeing over 50,000 patients a year.

Moorfields has nine operating theatres at its City Road site, and a further eight theatres spread across its outreach centres, requiring expert theatre practitioners and nurses to support patients – around 22,500 a year – safely through their surgical experience.

Nurse practitioners and clinical nurse specialists work in nurse-led clinics and specialist services providing patient-focused care and advice, and participating in all aspects of service delivery.

Nursing staff have the opportunity to specialise in all areas of ophthalmology including adnexal, cataract, corneal, glaucoma, oncology, motility, neuro-ophthalmology, medical and vitreo-retinal services, and external eye disease.

Education and development

Moorfields is committed to the education and development of all of its staff. Nurses do not always need to have existing ophthalmic qualifications to join our team, as we offer a range of opportunities to undertake further and higher education, continuing professional development, and training.

Nurses also receive the backing of a practice development team of five clinical facilitators who support best practice within the clinical environment and work to develop the roles and skills required to maintain high standards of care.
