A small number of patients will need to stay as an inpatient, either because of the complexity of the operation, the anaesthetic, or because of other underlying medical conditions. Patients who still need overnight care for clinical reasons will be seen elsewhere at Moorfields, such as at our Duke Elder ward in St George’s Hospital in Tooting. There is much more back up care there if it’s needed because the ward is based in a general hospital.
Weekend emergency ophthalmic surgery will be performed at City Road in the emergency surgery unit. Patients will be treated as day cases as there is no facility for an overnight stay.
Patients with certain emergency ophthalmic conditions can be admitted to City Road into an observation bay sited within A&E. Patients will be monitored and treated for up to 24 hours, at which point they will either be discharged or transferred to the inpatient facilities on the Duke Elder ward in St George’s Hospital in Tooting as appropriate.
If a patient has a general health problem, they will be transferred to the nearest NHS general hospital A&E eg Royal London.
