The A&E department at Moorfields Eye Hospital has been rated as one of the best in London in a Healthcare Commission survey published on Wednesday 14 January 2009.

Nationally, Moorfields was in the best performing 20% of trusts for 12 of the 29* questions applicable to our patients. These were:

  • Patients being given enough privacy when discussing their condition with the receptionist
  • Patients being told how long they would have to wait to be examined
  • Doctors or nurses explaining patients’ conditions and treatments in ways they could understand
  • Doctors or nurses listening to what patients had to say
  • Doctors or nurses discussing patients’ anxieties and fears about their condition or treatment with them
  • Patients’ confidence and trust in the doctors and nurses examining and treating them
  • Information about conditions and treatments
  • Involvement in decisions about care and treatment
  • Cleanliness of the department
  • Feeling bothered or threatened by other patients
  • Patients being told when they could resume normal activities
  • Being treated with dignity and respect

We were in the worst performing 20% of trusts for just two questions – how long patients waited before being examined by a nurse or doctor and whether patients thought that hospital staff did everything possible to help control their pain.

For these areas, as well as those where we scored towards the lower end of the intermediate 60% of trusts, an action plan is now in place to ensure improvements in future.

The full report for Moorfields’ A&E can be downloaded by clicking on the link below.

Please note Moorfields is a single specialty ophthalmic hospital and we only deal with eye problems in our accident and emergency department. If you have a general health problem you should telephone NHS Direct for advice (0845 4647), contact your GP or attend your local accident and emergency department.

*Moorfields was rated against 30 questions, but one of these related to the convenience of parking in the hospital car park, so has been discounted in this analysis as there is no car park at City Road.
