Swine flu preparedness - important information for patients and the public

In common with the rest of the NHS, Moorfields is taking precautionary measures to ensure that we are well-prepared to respond to any future flu pandemic.

There are simple steps that all patients and members of the public can take to help prevent catching colds and flu, based on good respiratory and hand hygiene:

  • Always use a tissue to catch your sneezes
  • Throw away used tissues where germs can linger
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water to reduce the spread of any virus from your hands to face or to other people

If you have recently visited one of the countries or areas where human cases of swine influenza have been identified, you are advised to monitor your health closely for seven days. If during this period you develop a feverish illness accompanied by one or more of the following: a cough, sore throat, headache or muscle aches, you should stay at home and contact your GP by phone or seek advice from NHS Direct (0845 4647).
