Moorfields given clean bill of health against national hygiene code
Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has been given a clean bill of health in the most recent assessment of its compliance against the national hygiene code, published today, Wednesday 16 December.
The hygiene code, published in 2006, lists actions to protect patients from healthcare-associated infections. Compliance is assessed through unannounced inspections to all hospital trusts to ensure that assessors from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) see hospitals just as a patient or visitor would.
The CQC made a routine unannounced visit to Moorfields’ main hospital in London’s City Road on 11 November 2009. The team inspected several areas, including our specialist A&E department, our observation bay and a day-care ward, examined policies and procedures and met with a range of staff in order to assess compliance against the code. They concluded that the trust was fully compliant with the code’s requirements and that there was no evidence that we breached any of the regulations to protect patients, workers and others from the risks of acquiring a healthcare-associated infection.
“This is an excellent result, which builds on our already strong performance on infection control,” says Moorfields’ chief executive John Pelly. “We take very seriously all matters relating to healthcare-associated infections and have had no cases of either clostridium difficile or MRSA bloodstream infections to date. The CQC’s assessment is a tribute to the many staff across Moorfields who work hard to ensure that patients, staff and visitors are adequately protected against infection while in our care.”
