Moorfields is using the internet to share the knowledge and advice of its consultant eye specialists with hospitals in the developing world.

As part of a project originally initiated in partnership with Cable and Wireless, and now run by the Trust, eye specialists in Gambia, Ghana, Malaysia, South Africa and Tanzania are able to access a dedicated internet site set up to help them.

The site enables them to enhance local diagnosis by seeking second opinions from consultant eye specialists at Moorfields and to review case histories, images and diagrams.

The project has also provided specialist digital cameras and computers to those involved, and eye specialists in each country have been trained as part of the initiative.

This project is part of an ongoing programme of research, and the results are regularly published in the Journal of Telemedicine and Telecare, and elsewhere.
