As part of its commitment to teaching and training, Moorfields welcomes doctors from around the world to observe its renowned treatment of eye diseases and injuries.

Visiting ophthalmologists cannot treat patients, but they do have the opportunity to observe Moorfields' consultants in action, examine patients with slit lamps and ophthalmoscopes, attend surgical operations, and carry out research in their spare time.

NHS hygiene code guidelines

Please note that observers must abide by the new NHS hygiene guideline codes listed below:

  • no white coats
  • “bare below the elbow”
  • no wrist watches/jewellery (only a small wedding band ring may be worn)
  • no arm bands
  • ties if worn should not be hanging loose.

Moorfields' clinical services are divided into a number of specialist services, each handling a particular sub-speciality of ophthalmology.

Visitors can choose to observe in one or more of the following services for a maximum stay of two months;

It is advisable to apply six to nine months in advance of the date you wish to visit.

Before you make your application, please ensure you have read and understood the observer application procedures.

Please note that the hospital does not provide accommodation for observers.
