We accept medical elective students in their fourth or fifth year of study. Due to the sub-specialist nature of the work in ophthalmology, previous experience and knowledge of the subject would be an advantage. Places get booked up quickly so it is advisable to apply about nine to 12 months in advance.
NHS hygiene code guidelines
Please note that medical elective students must abide by the new NHS hygiene guideline codes listed below:
- no white coats
- “bare below the elbow”
- no wrist watches/jewellery (only a small wedding band ring may be worn)
- no arm bands
- ties if worn should not be hanging loose.
Fees
The fee for an elective period is £100, which must be paid in advance at the time of returning the agreement form for all students who are accepted onto the programme. In the event of a student cancelling their elective period, this fee is non-refundable.
The fee can be paid by personal bank cheque in sterling or by credit or debit card. Please ensure you have read and understood the elective application procedures before submitting your application.
We cannot arrange accommodation for you, but a list of suitable hotels and hostels is available on request.
Timetable
The maximum stay for any elective student is four weeks. A formal timetable will be allocated to each student, and this must be followed for the duration of their stay. The timetable encompasses both clinical and surgical sessions.
