A VISION FOR VISION – celebrating the achievements of the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre for Ophthalmology at Moorfields Eye Hospital and the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology
More than 200 people attended a special symposium – A Vision for Vision – on 16 November 2010 to find out more about the many achievements of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Specialist Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) for Ophthalmology, which is based at Moorfields Eye Hospital and the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology.
Attended by patient representatives, government and charitable sponsors, industrial partners and research collaborators from the UK and Europe, the event provided a chance to tell people about some of our recent achievements, as well as about future plans for the centre.
The day included presentations and updates from a range of specialists, including Professor Peng Tee Khaw, Moorfields’ director of research and development and director of the BRC for Ophthalmology and Moorfields, and our six specialist theme leaders. Other speakers included Professor Phil Luthert, director of the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, Professor Sir John Tooke, vice provost (health) at UCL, Professor Dame Sally Davies, interim chief medical officer at the Department of Health, Professor Janet Darbyshire, former joint director of the NIHR clinical research network, Professor Jose Cuhna-Vaz, emeritus professor of ophthalmology at Coimbra University in Portugal and Professor Jose Sahel, head of the Institute de la Vision at the Hopital des Quinze-Vingts in Paris.
Moorfields and the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology are one of only 12 sites nationally to be awarded NIHR biomedical research centre status for translational research, which helps us to attract extra funding to support our research programmes and to fast-track exciting new developments more rapidly to benefit patients.
