Biomedical research centre

The Moorfields Eye Hospital/UCL Institute of Ophthalmology National Institute for Health Research Biomedical Research Centre is a partnership between Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology.

Established in April 2007, the centre is funded by the Department of Health and is part of the National Institute for Health Research. Its purpose is to conduct 'translational research' that is designed to take advances in basic medical research from the laboratory to the clinic, enabling patients to benefit more quickly from new scientific breakthroughs.

Our centre is one of 12 biomedical research centres that were awarded to NHS-university partnerships with an outstanding international reputation for medical research and expertise, and experience of translating that research into the clinical setting.

The Moorfields Eye Hospital/UCL Institute of Ophthalmology partnership has an outstanding track record of basic biomedical research, much of which has led to translational programmes and innovations that have already benefited large numbers of patients in the United Kingdom and around the world.

The juxtaposition of a huge and unique clinical resource at one of the largest and the longest established eye hospitals in the world, together with one of the largest and most productive eye research institutions with 40 academic staff, has led to a wide range of ground-breaking biomedical research firmly embedded in an appreciation of important clinical problems.

Our centre has a total of four NIHR Senior Investigators; Professor Robin Ali, Professor Peng Tee Khaw, Professor Tony Moore and Professor Ted Garway-Heath. Senior Investigators are the NIHR’s most pre-eminent researchers and include some of the nation’s most outstanding leaders of patient and people based health and social care research.
