Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust recognises that, as a healthcare provider that promotes wellbeing, we have a responsibility to minimise our impact on the environment and ensure that our use of resources is efficient so that we can maximise the funds available for patient care.

We are developing a sustainability strategy to ensure that we can:

  • Embed environmental awareness among our staff, patients and visitors
  • Provide training to encourage behavioural change
  • Apply the principles of sustainable procurement
  • Reduce the quantities of waste sent to landfill by smart procurement, waste segregation and cost-effective recycling
  • Improve the environmental performance of the existing estate by implementing low carbon and water efficient technologies where suitable, making efficient and responsible use of resources and applying the principles of sustainable facilities management
  • Reduce the environmental impact of staff and patient travel by ensuring that as much care as possible can be delivered closer to patients’ homes through our outreach centres, the effective use of electronic information and communications and encouraging the use of more sustainable forms of transport where appropriate

NHS Sustainability Day 2012

Moorfields is participating in the first NHS Sustainability Day of Action on Wednesday 28 March. The day is designed to raise awareness and help staff, patients and visitors understand why sustainability is important.

We are running the following activities:

  • Information stalls in the main entrance or the third-floor restaurant at our main City Road hospital offering advice on energy efficiency, water conservation, recycling and sustainable travel – and providing a chance for you to feedback on your experiences of sustainability at Moorfields
  • Our monthly art workshop will have a sustainability theme, and offers a chance to try your hand at a spot of art. For Sustainability Day, we'll be turning recyclable arts materials to turn into lovely things, some of which could be sold at the next art exhibition, scheduled for June. The arts workshop will be held between 2pm and 5pm either in the main entrance or in the third-floor canteen

Earlier in the month, several of our staff took advantage of free cycle training provided by the London Borough of Islington, designed to encourage more people to get on their bikes and reduce their carbon footprint.
