Moorfields treats patients with a wide range of eye problems, from common complaints to rare conditions that require treatment not available elsewhere in the UK. Our services include the diagnosis and treatment of large-volume general conditions such as cataract, as well as smaller sub-specialties, including neuro-ophthalmology, ophthalmic genetics and inherited eye disease, paediatric glaucoma, paediatric cornea and cataract, and rehabilitation services.
Patient services are organised into 10 ophthalmic sub-specialties as follows:
- Accident and emergency and primary care
- Adnexal – for treatments for the accessories or anatomical parts attached to the eyeball, such as the eyelids, extraocular muscles, orbit and lacrimal glands
- Anaesthetics
- Anterior segment – for conditions relating to the front third of the eyeball, including the cornea, iris and lens
- Cataract
- Glaucoma
- Medical retina – for conditions at the back of the eye, which are treated medically using drugs, eye drops or lasers
- Paediatrics
- Strabismus (squints)
- Vitreoretinal surgery – for conditions at the back of the eye that require surgical interventions, including retinal detachment
These directorates are supported by a range of clinical support services, many of which have national and international reputations for the quality of their work, and are involved in research and teaching.
As well as providing services at our main hospital in London’s City Road, our experts also see patients in 21 satellite locations in and around the capital.
Operationally, patient services are supported by three service delivery units, which cover the following areas:
- Clinical and support services
- Capacity, access and theatres
- Satellite services
In addition, our nursing directorate oversees infection control and patient advice and support services, which includes our patient advice and liaison service (PALS) and complaints team.
