Professor Peng Tee Khaw consultant ophthalmic surgeon at Moorfields; appointed as one of the new programme managing directors of UCL Partners

Professor Peng Tee Khaw consultant ophthalmic surgeon at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, and Professor of Glaucoma and Ocular Healing at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology has been appointed as one of six new programme managing directors and will lead on the research theme of eyes and vision for UCL Partners. Professor Khaw is also Director of the affiliated National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Specialist Biomedical Research Centre, and Director of Research and Development at Moorfields Eye Hospital.

“I am delighted to have been offered the opportunity to lead ophthalmic research and development across our new academic health science partnership,” says Professor Khaw.  “The UK is at the forefront of ophthalmic research in the world, translating basic science into better sight, and I look forward to enhancing this further in collaboration with other members of UCL Partners”.

Professor Khaw new appointment was one of seven key appointments for UCL Partners (UCLP), Europe’s largest academic health science centre, which were announced on the 12 June, including a managing director of the partnership Professor David Fish and a further five programme directors who will lead on other research themes in infectious diseases; neurological disorders; child health; women’s health; and immunology and transplantation.

Professor Khaw is also on the board of trustees of the Association for Research into Vision and Ophthalmology.  His research interests include new surgical techniques, having developed the Moorfields safer glaucoma surgery system and new therapies to prevent ocular scarring, some of which are now in use in the UK and around the world.

He has published more than 350 papers, chapters and books including the ABC of Eyes– the most popular ophthalmology book in the UK for GPs and medical students.  He and his group have received many awards, including the first international ARVO USA Pfizer translational medicine prize in 2005 for developing basic laboratory discoveries through to several new clinical treatments and techniques.

UCLP comprises five of London’s biggest and best known hospitals and research centres: UCL (University College London), Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust (GOSH), Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, the Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust and University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH).

It was designated as one of the UK’s first academic health science centres by the Department of Health in March 2009 after a rigorous selection process, and will bring together the combined skill and expertise of its clinicians and researchers to focus on the identified themes. Appointments for the cardiovascular and cancer themes are pending and will be announced in the near future.
