Moorfields Eye Hospital receives highest Masonic grant of the year
The Moorfields Eye Hospital Development Fund has been awarded a grant of £250,000 by the Freemasons’ Grand Charity to support research into therapies to prevent ocular scarring and enable stem cell regeneration of sight.

The partnership between Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and UCL Institute of Ophthalmology has created the oldest and largest centre in the world for treatment of, and research into, ocular diseases.

Professor Barrie R. Jones, who shaped the modern face of Moorfields, died 19 August 2009 
In the bright sky of modern ophthalmology, a light has gone out.  The death of Professor Barrie R. Jones on Wednesday 19th August, at the age of 88, leaves a void in the pantheon of modern ophthalmic practice.  No man has had a more profound influence on the conduct of a medical speciality and the pursuit of worldwide eye health.

By-election results complete new membership council for Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
Elections were held in January 2009 in several constituencies of Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust to choose governors to represent members on our membership council, with effect from April 2009. Further by-elections were held in June 2009 to fill the remaining seats.

Professor Peng Tee Khaw consultant ophthalmic surgeon at Moorfields; appointed as one of the new programme managing directors of UCL Partners 
Professor Peng Tee Khaw consultant ophthalmic surgeon at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, and Professor of Glaucoma and Ocular Healing at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology has been appointed as one of six new programme managing directors and will lead on the research theme of eyes and vision for UCL Partners. Professor Khaw is also Director of the affiliated National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Specialist Biomedical Research Centre, and Director of Research and Development at Moorfields Eye Hospital.

More than nine out of 10 Moorfields’ patients rate their care as good or excellent, with a similar proportion likely to recommend the hospital to friends or family according to the findings of a recent independent survey.

Declaration of compliance against Care Quality Commission core standards 2008/09
The board of Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust agreed at its meeting on 30 April 2009 to declare full compliance with 23 out of 24 of the core standards set by the Care Quality Commission, the national regulatory body that replaced the Healthcare Commission in April 2009.

Foundation trust fifth anniversary
The new financial year, which began on 1 April 2009, heralds Moorfields' fifth anniversary as an NHS foundation trust. In April 2004, we were one of the first 10 trusts across England and Wales to achieve foundation trust status, a success that we will be celebrating over the coming months.

Moorfields raising awareness on World Glaucoma Day
Moorfields will be working alongside the RNIB and the International Glaucoma Association (IGA) to promote the second World Glaucoma Day, which takes place on 12 March 2009.

Moorfields' partnership one of the first in the UK to become academic health science centre
UCL Partners, which includes Moorfields, was designated as one of the UK’s first academic health science centres by the Department of Health on Monday 9 March 2009. The partnership is one of just five bids that satisfied the rigorous selection process, demonstrating that it possesses excellence in research, education and patient care.

Strong performance against national hygiene code
Moorfields is meeting the requirements of the national hygiene code in five of the six areas against which we were assessed during an unannounced visit by the Healthcare Commission in January 2009.

Text reminder service 
From Monday 19 January 2009, new outpatients at Moorfields' main City Road hospital who provide us with a mobile phone number will receive a text reminder of their appointment.  We hope that this will reduce the number of patients who fail to attend for their appointments and enable us to manage clinic slots more efficiently.

The A&E department at Moorfields Eye Hospital has been rated as one of the best in London in a Healthcare Commission survey published on Wednesday 14 January 2009.

Registration now open for annual ophthalmic nurses conference and exhibition - 30 January 2009
The Moorfields Eye Hospital ophthalmic nurses annual conference will take place on Friday 30 January.  The theme of this year’s conference, which is being run in collaboration with City University London, is ‘Ophthalmic Nursing: Improving the Patient Experience’ and will be chaired by chief operating and nursing officer, Mark Cubbon, who is also an honorary visiting professor with City University.

Innovative glaucoma test wins prestigious national award
An innovative computer-based technology to test for glaucoma developed by experts at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, in partnership with the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and City University London, was named as overall winner in the Medical Research Council translational research innovation award category of the 2008 Medical Futures competition on Tuesday 2 December.

Patient experience tracker - using your views to improve our services
The patient experience tracker (PET) is an electronic patient feedback system that provides a straightforward and user-friendly way of capturing and analysing patient satisfaction with the care they receive at Moorfields. Initially designed for the retail and service sector, many NHS Trusts across England and Wales are using it to help develop and maintain their services.

Europe's largest academic health science partnership created in London
Five of Britainʼs world renowned medical research centres and hospitals are coming together to create what will be Europeʼs leading health research powerhouse. The intention is to deliver real improvements in health for patients in London, and around the world.  Based in the capital, the new academic health science partnership – to be known as UCL Partners – will support over 3,500 scientists, senior researchers and consultants, with a combined annual turnover of around two billion.

Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and its research partner the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology are pleased to be part of Europe’s largest academic health science partnership with UCL (University College London) and other partner hospitals, known as UCL Partners.

New director of research and development 
Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Peng Tee Khaw as its new director of research and development.  Professor Khaw will take up his new post in August 2008, succeeding Professor Roger Hitchings, who steps down in July.

World's first gene therapy for inherited blindness

UK researchers from the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and Moorfields Eye Hospital NIHR Biomedical Research Centre have announced results from the world’s first clinical trial to test a revolutionary gene therapy treatment for a type of inherited blindness. The results, published today in the New England Journal of Medicine, show that the experimental treatment is safe and can improve sight. The findings are a landmark for gene therapy technology and could have a significant impact on future treatments for eye disease.

First retinal implant operations carried out at Moorfields
As part of an international Phase I clinical study, Moorfields' surgeons carried out two successful operations to implant an artificial electronic retinal device into the eyes of two blind patients. This is the first time that such devices have been implanted in Britain.

Moorfields Motion Displacement Test in development to aid global glaucoma diagnoses
Detecting glaucoma during a standard sight test can be problematic. The new Moorfields Motion Displacement Test (MDT) is reaching the final stages of development thanks to resarch by Moorfields in partnership with the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and City University London. The Moorfields MDT utilises a unique software programme to investigate the visual field (peripheral vision), one of three recommended assessments used in the diagnosis of glaucoma.

1st World Glaucoma Day
This Thursday, 6 March, is the 1st World Glaucoma Day, designed to enhance global glaucoma awareness. Moorfields' response to World Glaucoma Day is tholding a glaucoma test session at The House of Commons to inform members of parliament (MPs) of the global challenge of glaucoma detection and the impact on their constituents. The event is being organised by the RNIB, steered by Moorfields and supported by the International Glaucoma Association (IGA).

Moorfields at Bedford is site for sore eyes
Although the latest outreach centre in Bedford opened its doors in October last year, the official handover was performed on 29th January by Bedford Hospital NHS Trust's CEO, Jean O’Callaghan and Moorfield’s Chairman, Sir Thomas Boyd Carpenter.
