Ultrasound scans be used to provide vital information about the eyes when an examination with optical instruments is not possible. The scans are painless and take only a few minutes to complete.

The ultrasound department at Moorfields provides a diagnostic and measurement service to most of the specialist services within the Trust, including at our outreach clinics, and to over 100 other hospitals.

The department is the leading centre for ophthalmic ultrasound in the UK, and has a national and international reputation. The department also acts as an advice centre on diagnostic and equipment specification issues.

In addition to providing a high quality clinical service, the department actively engages in a large number of research projects in basic science and in the application of ultrasound in ophthalmology.

Where we are

The ultrasound department is located on the lower ground floor at the Trust's main site at City Road in central London.
