An orthoptist specialises in diagnosing and treating visual problems involving eye movement and alignment. The orthoptics department at Moorfields provides clinical support to all the specialist services at the Trust. We see both adults and children who have strabismus (a squint), disorders of eye movements, or binocular vision.

For children, we specialise in the assessment of visual performance and the treatment of amblyopia (lazy eye), and for adults, we offer assessment and treatment of double vision.

Patients at the Trust are generally internally referred by the specialist services.

Orthoptists at the Trust are all registered with the Health Professions Council, the independent UK-wide health regulator which sets standards of professional training, performance and conduct for orthoptists and other health professionals.

Where we are

We can be found on the lower ground floor at the Trust's main site at City Road in central London and at the Duke Elder Eye Centre at St George’s Hospital in Tooting.

Orthoptic services are also available at our outreach sites at Ealing, Northwick Park Hospital, the Homerton Hospital, Potters Bar, the Upney Lane Centre in Barking, the John Scott Health Centre, and St Ann’s Hospital,
