The optometry department at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust offers a range of services to patients currently being seen at Moorfields.

What services do we offer?

We see adults and children for refraction; low vision assessment; spectacle dispensing and medical contact lenses. Some of the contact lenses and spectacles that we dispense are manufactured on site within our in-house manufacturing facility. Our optometrists also work in many of the specialist clinical services provided by the hospital.

Refraction

With this assessment, an optometrist can determine the optical power of the eye, the presence of any “refractive” error that requires spectacle correction, and the best vision that an eye can achieve with an appropriate correction.

Low vision assessment (LVA)

Where good vision cannot be achieved with spectacles or contact lenses, patients can be assessed in the low vision clinic. An optometrist will perform a refraction if necessary and demonstrate low vision devices such as specialist spectacles, magnifiers or telescopes. Electronic magnifiers are also available for demonstration as well as discussion on optimal lighting and other methods to maximise the use of remaining vision.

Spectacle dispensing

The spectacle dispensing department is one of the largest of its type within the UK Hospital Eye Service. Our dispensing opticians interpret the prescription created during a refraction test and advise on the best spectacle lens type and design to achieve the best possible visual and cosmetic outcome. They have a wide and varied experience in spectacle dispensing and are therefore able to advise on complex and challenging prescriptions. The range of frames that we stock is aimed at all age groups, taking into account currents trends and fashions.

Contact lens service

The contact lens service at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provides lenses when there is a medical need, usually when vision cannot be improved with spectacles. See the Contact lens service section for full range of service and contact details.

Where we are

Optometry staff work in most of Moorfields’ sites. However, the optometry department is located on the ground floor at the Trust’s main site on City Road in central London. Children’s services are located in the Richard Desmond Children’s Eye Centre.
